What would cause a light switch to get hot?

If the light switch was improperly wired, it will get hot. Loose or broken wires that are still slightly touching will allow the light switch to function. However, the electricity will be forced through a smaller path, and this will create heat. Again, this is a fire risk.

Which terminal is hot on a light switch?

The switches have two screw terminals plus a ground screw. One screw terminal is for the “hot” wire that feeds the switch from the power source. The other terminal is for a second hot wire, called a switch leg, that runs only between the switch and the light fixture.

Can a light switch overheat?

Hot light switches can damage the switch and wiring, and it could end up causing an electrical fire. Although Dimmer switches do run a little hot, even they can become too hot and cause damage. Light switches that have been hot for a long period of time will overheat the wiring, which can burn or damage the insulation.
