Streaming

A technology that supports continuous one-way transmission of audio and/or video data over the Internet and, more recently, over a cellular network. Unlike audio files (eg MP3) and video files (eg MPEG), which must be downloaded first, streaming media playback starts a few seconds after the request. Streaming requires a streaming encoder (which converts an audio or video source into a data stream), a streaming server that serves the encoded media over the network, and a client media player that works with the server to deliver media without any hassle. To accommodate fluctuations in network quality and latency, the client buffers the audio or video for a few seconds before starting the stream, then tries to maintain the lead during playback. Some examples of streaming systems are Windows Media, QuickTime, and RealPlayer.

Streaming is short for live streaming.
