Do trailer brakes work with the brake pedal?

Expert Reply: Sounds like your brake controller will apply your trailer brakes if you apply the manual override lever but not when you press the brake pedal. Make sure it is connected to a circuit that only sees voltage when the brakes are applied and none when released.

Why is my trailer brake controller not working?

This sounds like the trailer brakes are not receiving the signal from the brake controller when you apply the brakes. I believe what is happening is that you may have a loose, broken, or inaccurate connection on the red wire from the brake controller. The red wire needs to attach to the stop light switch above the brake pedal.

How do I make my trailer brakes work?

You will need to connect the red wire from the P2 brake controller to the cold side of the stop light switch. Use a circuit tester, item # 40376 if needed, and find the wire at the brake switch that has power only when the brake pedal is pressed. Connect the red wire to this circuit.

Can a brake controller be connected to a positive battery?

Verify that the white brake controller wire (ground function) is connected to the negative battery terminal. Verify that the black brake controller wire (12V power function) is connected to the positive battery terminal with a 20 or 30 amp circuit breaker installed in line.

What causes trailer brakes to engage when plugged in?

Corrosion in trailer and/or vehicle plug. Brake signal wire on trailer or vehicle is damaged, exposed wiring is touching metal area. Trailer brakes engage when it is plugged into the vehicle. Incorrect stoplight wire connection. Corrosion in trailer and/or vehicle plug. Adapter wiring does not match OEM connector on vehicle.

How can I tell if my trailer brakes are working?

You should show voltage on the wire when the trucks brake pedal is pressed. If you do not find any power on this wire, you will need to trace it back to its connection to the brake stoplight switch located at the top of the brake pedal. Make sure that this connection has not come loose, and that it has been connected to the correct circuit.
